The Ugly Duckling, Not So Ugly!

It wasn’t long when people here in Jakarta, were so fascinated with beautifully served Peking roasted duck.  New Chinese restaurants, I may say the “fine” one were racing with one and another to offer the best Peking duck they could have.  Of course, high-end customers would easily hop to one fancy Chinese restaurant and another to experience and reward which would be the best, but what are others people option? those who don’t enjoy duck or who simply reluctant to spend much on eating duck? Well, I’m telling you know. I was never a fan of duck,  in any form of representation, I guess because I wasn’t used to eating it, in my family none of us has eaten duck yet except me, probably because the place where we came from,  duck isn’t something that is normally served for family dishes.  But a friend of mine were kind of forcing me to eat this particular duck in a not so fancy restaurant called Bebek Kaleyo, against all of my cynicism towards duck.  He just told me to eat and enjoy, and he guaranteed me that I would love it.  First when it was served, there were still doubts on putting it in my mouth, because it doesn’t look nice a t all, nonetheless I forced my self to eat it reluctantly. But surprisingly he was right, The moment I tasted it, I found right away the delicacy is just beyond. It breaks all the spell about the duckling. It’s really something. The duck is simply served with sambal (a traditional chili paste) , tempe (soya bean cake) and cucumber slice along with mango slices.  Since that  day, I decided to be a fan. And I kept coming back and bringing people to this place.

Price for one meal and drink is around Rp 25.000 or equivalent to US$ 2.7.  Located in eastern Jakarta called Rawamangun Area, easily accessed by public transportation.

Here’s  a simple tips  if you happen to visit this place

1. If  you only eat breast part of the duck meat, you’re highly recommended to come before 12:00 pm, because by 14:00 pm, all the breast part of the duck is finished. other option, you can come after 17:00 Pm because their breast meat stock will only come by that time.

2.  If you do not want it to be spicy but still want to experience the sambal, ask the waiter to separate the duck with its sambal hijau (green chili), you can simply put away the sambal hijau if you can’t survive the hotness

3. Do not come on Sunday, because they close. And Do not come in between 14:30 – 17:00 because they take breaks .  Open by 11:00 am and close by 22:00 pm

4. Try the desserts menu, the mouthwatering es teler or es campur (A mix of shaved ice with milk, jack fruit, avocado coconut and syrup) it is also nice.

5.  Bear in mind this place is always full no matter when, so better come early when it opens.

One whole mealKaleyo2

It looks similar to nasi lemak, is this dish local Indo food or the mixture of Malaysian? It looks good!

It looks similar, but it actually doesn’t.Nasi lemak is cooked with coconut milk, meanwhie this rice is just plain rice. And nasi lemak is not usually served together with friend duck or roast duck. This is defintely awesome food because the duck meat is mixed with spices and the meat really taste gentle and juicy. I guess this dishes is originally from java.
